Yeast Infections Caused by Drug-Resistant Candida in Hospitals
Candida yeast can become drug resistant in a hospital setting, and the increase in drug-resistant strains has become somewhat alarming. Caretakers and hospital workers are (or should be) particularly careful about keeping catheters and IV’s clean and disinfected. Some hospitals have drug-resistant yeast populations that are highly invasive, and these infections need to be treated aggressively. Infections in hospitals caused by drug-resistant strains of Candida are becoming a growing concern. Patients in more remote hospitals in third-world countries are particularly at risk for these infections after an operation or when receiving IV treatment, which creates an opening in the skin that acts as a doorway for the invasive yeast.
